Swindon Town got back to winning ways in pre-season, seeing off League One Leyton Orient 2-1 at the Nigel Eady County Ground. Despite being up against what would almost be a starting Leyton Orient team, Swindon started quickly and soon took the lead. After winning the ball on the halfway line, Ollie Palmer slipped Louis Millard through on goal, and he made no mistake, dispatching into the bottom corner. It was the League One side having most of the touches, but the game was largely playing out how Swindon would have wanted. Their defensive structure was making life difficult for Orient, and they were producing very little of substance, whilst Town were pinching the ball back and skirmishing forwards. They could even have been further ahead when Jonny Williams drifted a free kick from near the halfway line to the back post. Millard headed it back across for Matty Virtue, who guided one towards the bottom corner, only for Nathan Baxter to get in the way. It would not be long before that defensive resilience was fully rewarded, as Millard won the ball back off Will Forrester, allowing Ollie Palmer to find Virtue, who swept a pass into the path of a charging Mitch Clark. He had the time to drill a low ball in, and Virtue finished it off this time. As has become typical this summer, before anyone could get too carried away, Clark was forced off after going down with an issue. But that could not take all of the gleam off of what was once again a very promising display, where Swindon defended like a phalanx, impossible to penetrate with the capability of biting back. Shortly after the break, Baxter got away with one after he looped a touch into the air, allowing Millard to close him. His clearance came to Palmer in the centre circle, but he could not get a shot off. Orient almost struck themselves as Dom Ballard raced after a ball in the corner, cut inside Stephan Negru, and reversed a shot at the near post. Connor Ripley got down to block it. Swindon were suddenly causing their own issues, with James Debayo taking a very heavy touch in his own box, allowing Armando Dobra to steal in, but Ripley came to his rescue. With 15 minutes to play, Theo Archibald was able to race away from Kaelan Majekodunmi from a long ball, bring it down, and send the ball into the far corner of the net. This match was another case of Swindon fading after making changes, and they were clinging on for dear life at the back, as sloppy mistakes saw wave after wave of Orient attacks crash forward. Town demonstrated plenty of good work on the training ground in their defensive play for much of the match. It was also a night to remember for Millard, who demonstrated his dynamic ability and electric pace. STFC starting XI: Ripley, Clark, Mabete, Kilkenny, Negru, Trialist A, Middlemas, Virtue, Palmer, Kirkman, Millard.
