Leyton Orient have completed the permanent signing of centre-back Joseph Olowu from Stockport County on a three-year contract, adding their seventh summer recruit as they build for the new campaign.
What happened with the Olowu transfer?
Orient’s head coach Richie Wellens has reunited with defender Joseph Olowu, who joined the O’s on a permanent deal from Stockport County. The 26-year-old centre-back arrives for an undisclosed fee and signs a three-year agreement. Olowu’s move follows 31 league appearances for Stockport last season, when they reached the League One play-off final. His arrival comes as Orient sit 20th in League One with 52 points from 46 games and a recent run of two draws and three losses.
Wellens highlighted Olowu’s strengths after the deal, telling the club website: “Joseph is a good size and his data on duels is very good, both aerially and on the ground. He is quick and allows us to be very aggressive when we want to win possession back. On a personal note, he is a brilliant lad and a great character who will come in and be one of our leaders.”
Why does Olowu fit at Leyton Orient?
Olowu’s arrival adds depth to a defence that shipped 71 goals last season, leaving Orient with a goal difference of minus 12. His experience in League One, including a League Two title win with Doncaster Rovers in 2025, gives him the edge in physical battles. Wellens’ trust in him from their time together at Doncaster strengthens the squad’s leadership group as the club eyes better form next term.
Orient’s recent run has seen them pick up just two points from their last five matches, a sequence that leaves them 51 points behind league leaders Lincoln. Their next outing comes on August 2, when they face Antwerp at Brisbane Road.
What’s next for the O’s?
Olowu’s integration will be key as Orient look to turn their fortunes around. With 59 goals scored so far this season, the club will aim to tighten up at the back while maintaining their attacking threat. The new signing must quickly adapt to the demands of League One, where physicality and set-piece battles often decide tight games. Orient’s campaign resumes with the home clash against Antwerp, a fixture that could set the tone for the weeks ahead.
