Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens has confirmed striker Dom Ballard is “disappointed” after a £2.5 million bid from Bristol City failed to materialise. The 21-year-old, League One’s top scorer last term, now faces another season at Brisbane Road as his club prepares for a fresh League One campaign.
What happened with the transfer?
Wellens admitted the bid looked set to go through before stalling at the final hurdle. Speaking after Orient’s 1-0 pre-season win over Lincoln City on Friday, he said: “We’ve had a bid from Bristol [for Ballard] that I thought would get done, if I’m being honest. But just didn’t go that extra little bit.” The collapse leaves Ballard, whose contract runs until summer 2028, at Leyton Orient for at least a few more months.
Orient sit 20th in League One with 52 points from 46 games, five behind Lincoln and on a run of two draws and three losses. Their next fixture is against Antwerp at home on 2 August 2026.
Why Ballard’s form still shines
Ballard scored 26 goals in 2025/26 despite Orient’s 20th-place finish, topping the League One scoring charts. Wellens insists the striker has brushed off the disappointment and is training with renewed focus. “He’s been brilliant since he found out the news,” the manager added. “He’s obviously disappointed, he wants to play in the Championship - financially it’s very rewarding for him.”
With 59 goals scored and 71 conceded last season, Orient’s attack carried the side. Ballard’s ability to find space and finish under pressure makes him a target for Championship clubs, including newly promoted sides.
Can Orient hold on to their star?
Orient will try to keep Ballard until the season starts, but a poor start could force their hand. Wellens knows the club can’t keep him forever. “If the club has another poor season, Ballard’s form could drop off; and his value could follow suit,” he warned. A January exit remains an option if the right bid arrives.
Ballard’s contract includes a one-year extension clause, but the club’s financial situation means a sale could be inevitable. For now, he remains the O’s sharpest weapon as they chase a mid-table finish.
What’s next for Ballard?
At 21, Ballard still has time to step up to the Championship - or even the Premier League. “He will not be a League One player forever,” Wellens said. The forward’s next chance to impress comes on 2 August against Antwerp, a game that could set the tone for another tight League One season.
